Brooklyn FAM ‘24

Brooklyn FAM: Festival of Arts and Music is a community-empowering, community-building arts 501(c)3 nonprofit. I’ve been working and volunteering with them since 2021.

This year’s programming focused on Latinx and Afro-Latinx voices, so our festival designs reflects some colors and motifs from those cultures. I worked with our youth fellow, Laila Guzman Griffin, who could speak to the Latinx experience.

We devised the typography and color scheme from vintage 1950’s Cuban food packaging. A big part of the WABAFU Garifuna Dance Theater, who inspired the main dancing figure and traditional dress. We then added Mexican and African patterns, and illustrations of some of the aspects found in the festival. And of course a nod to Matisse’s dancers, to represent visual arts, crafting, and community.
